Formative assessment practices are a balanced application of teaching, learning and assessment which builds student mastery of content. This "assessment for learning" process requires teachers to change their teaching practices from the sage on the stage to a facilitator of learning. Likewise, it requires students to develop skills that allow them to guide their learning and the learning of their peers. This presentation will present research supporting the implementation of formative practices in the classroom, discusses the differences between formative and summative assessment, and reviews the 10 dimensions of formative assessment. Teachers will gain practical knowledge about formative practices and build strategies for implementing formative practices in their online classrooms.
